Buying Skateboard Wheels
Skateboard wheels are one of the most important skateboard parts; other parts being deck, trucks, and bearings. They are attached to the bottom of the skateboards and these wheels are attached with special axles called skateboard trucks.
While buying skateboard wheels, buy them according to the skateboarding you do as the hardness of wheel varies according to it. The skateboard wheels are usually made of polyurethane and are available in different degrees of hardness. The hardness of skateboard wheels is measured by durometer A scale.
Softer wheels are lower on the durometer scale and vice versa. The hardest wheel is about 100A on durometer and softest is around 75A. Along with hardness, the size of the wheels also matters. You can easily find skateboard wheels between 48mm to 100mm in size. This article discusses different types of skateboard wheels:
The wheels used in skateboards for street skateboarding are the smallest. These skateboard wheels measure anywhere between 48-55 mm. These wheels are hard which allows you to skate at higher speeds and the smaller size of these wheels makes it easier for you to perform flip tricks and ollies.
If you are into vert skateboarding, then vert skateboard wheels are the one for you. As vert skateboarding requires rolling at higher speed, jumping and landing on skateboarding ramps, the wheels used are the hardest. The size of these wheels is larger than the ones used in street skateboarding and range from 55-65mm which allows the skaters to maintain high speed before the jump. These skateboard wheels are used exclusively on skateboarding ramps.
For slalom racing, the wheels used are comparatively softer as better grip is needed on turns. In this type of skateboarding, the skaters are required to race downhill and the race course has obstacle cones in it. The objective is to complete the race in fastest time without knocking down those cones. The skateboard wheels used in slalom skateboarding are 60-75mm in size and large size of the wheels helps in sustaining top speed for longer durations.
The last type of skateboard wheels is longboard skateboard wheels. The longboards are mainly used for cruising and transport, and the wheels used in longboards are the largest. The size of the wheels is 65-100 mm to ensure that the ride is stable as well as comfortable.
